• Carnival off
• Fell races and well dressing hopefully still on
Charlesworth and Chisworth Carnival which was due to take place this Saturday afternoon has had to be called off.
The organisers reluctantly took the decision around lunchtime today after checking the condition of the village green where it was going to be held.
The committee say they had carried out regular inspections and up until Wednesday evening the ground was found to be suitable.
But by midday on Friday it was found that the rain over the previous 36 hours had made it inaccessible to vehicles, with standing water at the entrances at both the bottom and top of the field.
The decision was further enforced by Met. Office warnings on Saturday of torrential rain.
The committee had spent months organising the carnival which was going to include a parade of floats through the village.
Local organisations had also spent weeks designing floats and days making them.
Although the carnival is cancelled it is likely that the 2.30pm and 3.30pm fell races that start and finish on the village green will continue.
The well dressing at the school on Town Lane will take place at 10am on Sunday morning and there is a possibility of the carnival queens being crowned around the same time.
There is also is a suggestion that the Grey Mare and George and Dragon pubs and Charlesworth Village Club, could independently hold some kind of joint event, on their car parks on Saturday, but it would not be classed as a carnival.
