Plans for going green in Simmondley

Simmondley Green might not be one of the biggest village greens around, but neighbours want to make it one of the best.

Alison Gilbertson, explaining improvement plans to Charlesworth Parish Council, said: “We have got High Peak Borough Council to remove the plastic planters.

“Concrete flags and a concrete post will also be removed.”

Alison and her friends want to take away the clutter from the patch of greenery at the junction of Simmondley Lane and Simmondley New Road.

Wish list plans include two steps onto the green, which will have a memorial bench.

The close-knit community would also like the telephone box – which earlier this year was earmarked for possible closure – repainted.

They also want a ‘vintage’ post box in what is a conservation area.

There is a move to get village children involved in the project – but another big need is hard cash.

Improvements are likely to cost £600 and so far, the group has raised about half.

Alison went to the latest parish council meeting to apply for a grant.

Members were sympathetic, but it seems Simmondley Green falls outside the parish boundary so may not be eligible.

The council is looking to see if it can make a donation and, if so, it seems likely a grant will follow.
