As part of our series looking at the people behind local market stalls, every week the Chronicle will feature a profile of every trader on Glossop Market to tell their story. Here’s the latest…

Peter Sadler (pictured) has been cutting meat for five decades and has brought his wealth of experience in butchery to Glossop’s Indoor Market for the last 17 years.

The 65-year-old is one of the most experienced traders in the market, having run the stall Robinson’s Butchers since 2000.

He provides a wide selection of meats including beef, lamb and pork, as well as a range of sausages and bacon – some sourced in England and others from countries such as Denmark.

Although he lives in Stockport, Peter said it was the friendly nature of the people of Glossop that persuaded him to set up base in the town.

He told the Chronicle: “I had a shop in Grey Mare Lane precinct in Manchester for around 20 years but I was looking around for a change and the opportunity came up in Glossop.

“It was a lovely market with lovely customers and it’s something I have enjoyed doing all these years.

“Glossop is a nice town with nice people and it’s like going back in time on the market. I have established trust with suppliers who I have dealt with 20 or 30 years. I am in a good spot, just through the double doors in the arcade which helps.

“Locally sourced can be 60 or 70 miles and I have lots of regulars. I am familiar with all of the traders and it’s a nice community. You need everything to make a living these days. There is always competition in our industry but it’s about giving quality at a reasonable price which I feel that we do.”

Peter is based in the market on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 9am and 5pm.
